There’s no doubt that Captain Marvel is one of the most popular heroes in the MCU. In fact, the film has already broken some box office records. But there’s something else that the movie has going for it, too: diversity. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gotten pretty good about including diverse characters, but there’s still work to be done. And that’s where Carol Danvers, the MCU’s first solo, primary female superhero, comes in. Brie Larson is becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, and she could be taking on an even more important role in the future of superhero movies.

The movie’s depiction of Carol Danvers’ close relationship with Maria Rambeau has left fans convinced that she and the character are dating. While we never see them kiss or anything explicitly romantic, the two are very much in love with each other. And they have some flirtatious moments with each other. But is that enough evidence to make Carol Danvers gay?
Some people have suggested that making her gay would be a great step forward for the MCU. But others think that doing so would present an old-fashioned idea of what lesbians are like. Plus, it would limit the character’s potential as an inspiration to women and young girls.
Meanwhile, Marvel is reportedly on the hunt for its first openly gay hero. And while that’s a huge deal, it’s not quite as big as making Captain Marvel gay.
