When you think of the superhero comics, you likely think of Captain Marvel. The original costume, based on ancient Egyptian, Persian and military uniforms, featured a lightning bolt insignia on the chest. Later, the costume was updated to become a skin-tight one-piece suit. However, the current DC costume of Captain Marvel includes a collared white suit with a gold flower symbol on the lapel. The cape was typically thrown over the left shoulder and held by a gold cord.
The name change came about when DC sued Marvel over the idea of a superhero named Captain. DC claimed that Captain Marvel was too similar to Superman. However, Captain Marvel was first published by Fawcett Comics in 1957 and was a headline character for the company. In 1973, DC licensed the character’s rights and purchased them all in 1991. The new name, however, reflects the changes in the character’s identity.
Captain Marvel first appeared in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line. Her role became more prominent in the comic books after the release of Shazam!, a superhero team-up with Superman. This animated film is based on a comic book arc from the same name. Rachael MacFarlane and Corey Burton voiced Captain Marvel in the film, and the actor who voiced Billy Batson appeared in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon series.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has produced several successful films. Captain Marvel is part of the series, and was teased in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The film was released in March 2019 and grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. Brie Larson reprised her role in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
