Gemma Chan is one of the few actors to have played two different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress first appeared as Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel before appearing as Sersi in Eternals, a film that introduced the MCU’s Eternals, an advanced, immortal alien race that has been hiding on Earth for centuries. Although the two movies don’t directly interact, they both have a significant impact on the multiverse and its stories.
Chan began her career with small roles in television and film before gaining attention for her portrayal of the synthetic Anita/Mia in Channel 4’s science fiction series Humans and as Elizabeth Hardwick in the historical drama Mary Queen of Scots. She has also appeared in the acclaimed films Doctor Strange, The Great Wall and Sherlock. She has worked on stage as well, notably in the British premiere of Bertolt Brecht’s Turandot and the UK premiere of Yellow Face by Anders Lustgarten at Hampstead’s Finborough Theatre.
In addition to her work in TV and film, Chan is a well-known voice actor. She has provided the voices for a variety of characters in the BBC’s Doctor Who, The IT Crowd and Sherlock. She has also starred in several stage productions including The Snowman and The Elephant Man, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award. Other roles include Charlotte in season four of the Showtime and ITV2 series Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Ruth in Channel 4’s Fresh Meat, and Mia Bennett in The Waters of Mars.
