Captain Marvel – What Powers Does the Cosmic Hero Posses?

Some violence, language

The grand experiment that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe is grinding inexorably toward a close (Avengers: Endgame is in theaters next month) and as it does so, Captain Marvel takes center stage as its most powerful hero. The film has been hailed as a milestone in female superhero representation, with the experiences of women and girlhood baked into its frame. Those same experiences are likely to inform how you receive the movie, whether you embrace it as a groundbreaking work of advocacy or see it as a steamrollingly sexist big-budget superhero flick.

What powers does the cosmic hero possess?

Carol Danvers is the half-Kree, half-human soldier known as Captain Marvel, a Kree warrior who joined Earth’s military as a way to combat a shape-shifting Skrull invasion. After battling alongside her Starforce teammate and rival, Yon-Rogg, she was knocked into a Kree device called the Psyche-Magnitron, which dramatically altered her DNA and imbued her with Mar-Vell’s power set.

Aside from the base level of strength that comes with her Kree blood, she has a number of other superhuman abilities. She’s immune to disease, poison and toxins thanks to the genetically enhanced Kree blood. She also has what she calls a precognitive “seventh sense” that allows her to feel danger or crisis in the universe around her.

But perhaps her most iconic power is her ability to fly. Her time as a US Air Force pilot has honed her soaring prowess to the point where she can glide effortlessly through the sky. She’s even able to come close to the speed of light at times, making her one of the fastest heroes in the MCU.
