The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a history of serving up soap opera as much as sense-swamping action. From Peter Parker’s turbulent teens to family friction among the Fantastic Four, real-life drama has been a key ingredient of Marvel movies — and while some of the MCU TV series have become slogs, others have brought an intriguing mix of genres and affecting relationships to the small screen. With captain marvel wandavision, the studio’s first streaming series, it appears that they’re keeping up that tradition.
The premiere of the new Marvel TV show dropped plenty of easter eggs and subtle hints that even casual fans can start picking up on. And while it might take a few episodes to really kick into gear, the series has the feel of something that’s been built up over years rather than just rushed to market.
In WandaVision, Teyonah Parris is playing Monica Rambeau, the Air Force pilot daughter of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch). In Captain Marvel, we saw that Monica disappeared during the Blip, and she returned to discover her mother had died while she was gone. Over the course of the series, it becomes clear that Monica hasn’t fully processed her mother’s death, and she may harbor a grudge against Carol because of it.
And despite her status as a baseline government agent, we’re also seeing that she might have some very cool powers of her own thanks to her frequent trips into the Westview anomaly. As we head towards Captain Marvel 2, we can expect to see Monica reteam with her childhood hero in space, and if the latest episode of WandaVision is any indication, she might have a run-in with Nick Fury as well!
