The arrival of Marvel’s first female superhero to headline a feature film has triggered an unprecedented wave of fandom and fervor. But just like last year’s ‘Black Panther’, ‘Wonder Woman’, and ‘Ghostbusters’, ‘Captain Marvel’ is the target of toxic online bullying and attacks on its feminist message. It’s a shame because it’s a great film with a strong and important message.
To get the best possible experience from the movie, you should watch it on a HDTV and with a good quality sound system.
If you are a Marvel fan and you haven’t watched the show yet, I strongly recommend it. Even though it is a bit lighter than the usual Marvel fare, it’s still very much worth watching. It also focuses on real life issues like being a girl geek and finding your own identity. Iman Vellani is perfect in the title role, and it’s refreshing to see a character so well-rounded, especially as so many female characters in animation are relegated to supporting roles or completely erased from existence altogether.
It starts out with Kamala Khan trying to persuade her parents to let her go to the Avengers comic convention a bus ride away, refine her Ms Marvel costume, and placate her principal who calls her out on daydreaming and doodling in class. She’s an artist and a vlogger who’s passionate about the Avengers, particularly Captain Marvel. As the episodes progress, she finds herself entangled in a cosmic mystery involving Kree revolutionary Dar-Benn and her Jersey City superfan teammate Monica Rambeau (WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris). As they try to derail Dar-Benn’s plan, the girls need to learn to work together and harness their powers.
