It’s a new month and it’s time for the second Captain Marvel series! This one deals with Danvers, a planet where normal people have strange powers. In this book, we have an alien named Khaveer who becomes the new Captain Marvel. I really liked this book, it was a fun read with some great story elements. I’m very excited to see where writer Jason Latour takes the story next.
The story kicks off when Khaveer has to go into orbit on a cargo ship and is stranded without his Power Ring. He soon finds out that he has this shiny blue metal Power Ring, and a mysterious woman by the name of Mirage. She appears to be the new Captain Marvel and tells him about a secret group of warriors called the Shi’Hards. Khaveer agrees to help them in their quest to get back their lost Power Rings. The two of them work together, battling the evil villain Doctor Doom.
The action in this comic starts out in the modern day in New York City. There are several key moments in this book including an unexpected cameo by Spider-Man! The main story is told through the point of view of Khaveer who is seen from a distance. It’s nice that this first Captain Marvel isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel like the first X-Men or the New Avengers series. It’s a good start to a new era of comic books for the character.
The art in this first issue is quite nice. Writer Jason Latour draws in a very detailed style. The colors are deep and lively and show a great deal of emotion. I especially like the background of the Shi’Hards on the cover. I am particularly fond of the drawing of Shade and his sword.
The story is action packed and exciting. I didn’t know what to expect when I opened this book, but Latour kept the reader involved from start to finish. It’s a fantastic start to an already interesting series. If you like your super hero’s adventure to be gritty and real, this is the book for you. If you like your super hero’s adventures to be light hearted with some humor, this book is not for you.
This first Captain Marvel story is a great addition to the Marvel Universe. The artwork is on the same level as some of Jim Lee’s best works and gives a very pleasant experience for both the reader and artist. It’s a very entertaining read that will make both young and old fans happy. I’m very excited to see where the author takes the character next. I just hope he doesn’t turn him into a Black Canary.
