Captain Marvel is one of the most important superhero movies of the MCU. It is the first with a female lead and the first to address gender identity, the Time’s Up movement and sexual assault in the context of a major Hollywood production. It also manages to juggle multiple narrative threads and genres. And, despite being set in the 90’s and following a familiar plot structure, it isn’t drenched in cheap nostalgia like many of its predecessors.
Brie Larson’s performance is a career-defining one. It’s as much a political statement as it is a comic book movie and an unapologetic reminder that women’s strength is a force to be reckoned with.
The film’s visuals are a triumph. It has a crisp and clean look to it, relying on stylized visuals with bold contrast and vivid chromatic elements. Viewing in Ultra HD makes a huge difference, with the image looking refined and the colors appearing emboldened with richer hues and gradational gray tones.
The story itself is a bit convoluted but it ultimately succeeds. It takes a while to figure out what’s going on, but once the pieces come together in the final act it all comes together in a satisfying way. The Kree, the Skrulls and Goose get some great new developments, Danvers’ arc moves beyond being a one-dimensional hero into becoming a fully realized character in her own right and the romance between her and Fury has some real emotional resonance.
