When Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige debuted the first concept art for Captain Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con last year, fans were immediately drawn to a young-looking Nick Fury. Now, director Anna Boden and co-writer Ryan Fleck have finally revealed what the MCU’s toughest spy will look like in the new movie, which opens March 8.
The image shows a younger Fury, who is seen holding onto Carol Danvers in a space dogfight. This is in keeping with the story, which sees the two facing off against a Skrull invasion in 1995. Fury was also seen pages Danvers in the post-credit scene from Avengers: Infinity War, which sets up this year’s Avengers: Endgame.
This version of Fury is much younger than he is in the present day, with Jackson being digitally de-aged. As Yahoo reports, this process was “very meticulous,” with a number of tests being carried out to ensure the effect was seamless and natural. The filmmakers also consulted with makeup artist Lola Townsend to find out how the character would appear, as the look had to be a combination of tough and vulnerable.
In addition to Fury, the film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser and Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer. Annette Bening, Lashana Lynch and Algenis Perez Soto also appear in unspecified roles. The film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a script written by Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
