Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers, made her MCU debut in Captain Marvel (2019), set in 1995. The film explores her origin story, showing how she was a U.S. Air Force pilot who got her powers from an explosion involving the Tesseract, granting her superhuman strength, flight, and energy manipulation. She was taken by the Kree and became a soldier for Starforce under the name Vers, only to later discover her true past and turn against the Kree to help the Skrulls. By the film’s end, she leaves Earth to help the Skrulls find a new home.
Her next appearance was in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where she rescues Tony Stark and Nebula stranded in space. She plays a key role in confronting Thanos early in the film but leaves to assist other planets until the final battle. In the climax, she returns and destroys Thanos’ ship, showcasing her immense power. She nearly defeats Thanos but is momentarily overpowered when he uses the Power Stone.
She also appears in a mid-credits scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), where she analyzes the Ten Rings alongside Bruce Banner and Wong. She vanishes abruptly, hinting at her ongoing cosmic responsibilities.
She then appears in Ms. Marvel (2022) during a post-credits scene. Kamala Khan mysteriously swaps places with her, setting up their connection for The Marvels.
In The Marvels (2023), she teams up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan due to their entangled powers. She faces Dar-Benn, a Kree leader seeking revenge. Carol regains her confidence after feeling guilty about Hala’s destruction and ultimately restores the Kree homeworld. The film ends with Monica being stranded in an alternate universe and Kamala taking inspiration from Carol to start forming a team.
Throughout her MCU journey, Captain Marvel is portrayed as one of the most powerful heroes, often dealing with cosmic threats. Her character is shown as confident but somewhat distant, as she focuses on protecting the universe rather than staying on Earth. Her relationships with Nick Fury, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan highlight different aspects of her personality, from mentorship to unresolved tensions. Despite her brief appearances in ensemble films, her impact on the MCU is significant, especially with her immense power level and leadership in intergalactic conflicts.
Captain Marvel did not appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). However, there were early plans to introduce her in the film’s final scene when Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff assemble the new Avengers team. Originally, the idea was to have her land alongside the other heroes, but Kevin Feige decided against it, as they hadn’t cast Brie Larson yet and didn’t want to introduce her without proper setup. Instead, the final scene featured Falcon, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, and Vision as the new recruits. Captain Marvel was later introduced in her own solo film, Captain Marvel (2019).
