With the debut of Disney+, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a lot more to offer fans than just movies. TV shows, animation, and Special Presentations are all becoming part of the MCU as it grows to include new characters and revisits old ones. One hero who is getting an extra boost is Captain Marvel, who has been the subject of a number of different spin-offs.
Brie Larson first debuted as Carol Danvers a/k/a Captain Marvel in 2019’s self-titled blockbuster, and she has since appeared in Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Ms. Marvel before starring in her own solo sequel this fall. The character is also getting her own standalone series and an additional comic book one-shot.
At Comic-Con on Saturday, the cast of the upcoming MCU film The Marvels presented some footage and teased a major connection to the character that fans will be surprised by. The film, directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), stars Oscar winner Larson as Carol Danvers, WandaVision breakout Teyonah Parris as her best friend Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, Gary Lewis as Mar-Vell, Zawe Ashton as Starforce’s Commander Blitzkrieg, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
The footage showed that The Marvels will be set in the 1995, just a few years before Captain Marvel’s introduction in the MCU. The movie’s timeline will tie in to the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe event Secret Invasion, which will see Captain Marvel and her pals team up to take on the oncoming Skrull invasion. According to a Marvel Studios executive, the film will also heavily feature Nick Fury and Talos, who have worked closely with Captain Marvel in her various appearances.
