The acclaimed superhero film captain marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, took moviegoers into the heart of the Marvel Universe. Awe-inspiring natural beauty from coast to coast served as stunning backdrops for the action and drama of this sci-fi blockbuster. Many of the locations where they filmed are still in use and open to the public, while others can be explored on studio tours. From Louisiana to California, Edwards Air Force Base and the Jim Hall Racing Club in Oxnard provided the perfect locations for spectacular action sequences.
The fictional city of New Jersey in which the action takes place is based on Newark, an urban and suburban area with warm old homes on tree-lined streets and minaret-topped mosques. The downtown business and residential neighborhood around PATH train station was used for scenes involving Kamala Khan’s high school. And the fictional city’s military headquarters was a renovated warehouse on Coles Street, now home to several small businesses and a coffee shop.
Other locations used in the filming of the blockbuster included a plantation house outside Baton Rouge where the home of Maria Rambeau was filmed. The film crew also shot in the sand quarry at White Castle, Louisiana for a dramatic crash scene involving Carol Danvers and her flight partner. The team tried to capture as much of the filming of the action on location as possible rather than relying on CGI. Edwards Air Force Base, a screen regular for its appearances in Iron Man, Armageddon and the Transformers movies, gave the producers the ability to recreate Top Gun scenes. Shaver Lake, an artificial reservoir in the Sierra National Forest near Fresno, lent itself to a dramatic crash scene as well.
