The name “Captain Marvel” has been one of the most contested in comic book history. DC bought the rights to Fawcett’s Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) from their rivals in 1972, but by then, Marvel had already created their own hero with that name, Mar-Vell. Despite this, the two companies have been able to work together and use the same name for completely different heroes, even in crossovers.
In the upcoming Marvel/DC crossover event JLA/Avengers, both DC’s Billy Batson and Marvel’s Carol Danvers will appear. The two superheroes will team up to fight their overlapping nemeses, Black Adam and the Herald of Galactus. The meeting of the two heroes is a great visual gag that acknowledges the complicated legal battles between DC and Marvel over the name, but also shows that while they may be rivals in sales, they are still friends and coworkers at the same time.
Marvel and DC have a long history of working together, often using the same heroes in multiple series. This has even extended to their animated television series, with both Marvel and DC releasing their own versions of Superman and Batman. The two companies have even partnered on a number of video games, including the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe game where both DC and Marvel characters are teleported into the same universe for battle.
The most recent example of this co-operation is DC’s Shazam!, a popular character whose movie debut this year saw Zachary Levi take on the role. Hopefully, this will be the start of more collaborations between the two companies, as they both embrace the success of their new films and hero.
