In 2019, Brie Larson brought the superhero Carol Danvers to life, giving young girls a role model they can identify with. With her next appearance in The Marvels coming soon, now’s a great time to get up to speed on this intergalactic hero’s MCU journey.
This film was the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be centered on a woman, so it’s no surprise that it opened right up a heated debate over diversity in comic books and movies. While it’s true that the film pushed back against some of the more sexist criticism, it also brought forward a new generation of heroes who celebrate diversity in front of and behind the camera.
The movie opens with Vers (Brie Larson) waking up in Hala, the central planet of the Kree Empire. She has no memory of her previous adventures, but recalls a Kree starship, a woman, and an attacking Skrull—the shape-shifting enemy aliens that the Kree have been battling for decades.
From here, it’s a fast-paced adventure that doesn’t feel like the same kind of blockbuster you might expect from an MCU flick. For starters, the filmmakers never miss a chance to make an outdated reference to ’80s Earth culture—whether it’s raiding Radio Shack for parts or using the Alta Vista search engine at an internet cafe.
It’s also a rare moment in the MCU when there are two female directors—Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, known for their small-scale dramas and TV work—at the helm of a big-budget action film. Plus, the cast includes a diverse group of actors who give some of the most charismatic performances to date.
