As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown into one of the largest and most profitable film franchises in history, female superheroes have taken center stage. Captain Marvel, the first film to feature a woman as its lead, grossed over $1 billion and launched a new series of films for the studio. It was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Brie Larson in the title role. Now, they’ve moved on to other projects within the Marvel universe, but their sequel is bringing back their star and introducing Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris).
While we don’t know the exact plot for Captain Marvel 2, we do know that it will see Carol Danvers going “higher, further, faster” — especially now that she’s part of the Avengers team. The film will also feature the return of her friend Maria Rambeau, who was played as a child in the ’90s-set film by Akira Akbar and is now being portrayed by Lashana Lynch as an adult for the 2023 release.
Having worked on the project for so long, the filmmakers wanted to capture both Danvers’ toughness and vulnerability. “This movie is about a female superhero finding her own power and voice,” said co-director Anna Boden to ESPN. “So, it felt important to have women behind the camera.”
Nia DaCosta has been brought on board to direct the sequel and will draw from her neo-western Little Woods and Candyman remake to tell the story of Carol Danvers’ complicated life. She envisions the characters of Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau continuing to progress together as a trio, which could set up the possibility of a third film down the line.
